Part of the fun of being a
webmaster,
especially for a fun place like
Thematic Attic,
is coming up with radical ideas and having support for development.
While I can't go into much detail about Project Eagle, I can give a little background
and some hints as to what we're attempting to do. If you've checked out our first
official game,
Creatures,
you already have a hint. This game comes out of my 25 or so years playing with computers and
programming.
One of the first programs I ever entered into a computer was called "Animals" from a book on
BASIC
programming and worked much the same as
Creatures.
When I finished that early programming experience and had it
debugged,
my friend John and I started entering not only animals, but objects. We realized that the
program could be used for more than it was originally intended and learned some valuable
lessons about creativity and usability.
Later on, as I was completing my first college degree in programming, I revisited the
underlying concepts of that game for my senior project in
software enginerring.
This was a team effort to create a similar system, but this time we used
Social Security
rules for content. (NOTE: The precediing link is NOT that project but a similar
one done by someone else). The ultimate objective was to develop a system where people
could, through a series of yes or no questions, determine where they fit within the Social
Security system. I learned a lot about Social Security benefits beyond what most of us
know about crossing certain age boundaries.
My last quarter for that first degree was spent developing a system I called Eagle,
from E.G.L. or
Expert
Generation Language and also named after the school mascot and partly inspired by the
success of the school's
solar car program.
This last project was a minor
programming language
to test out my abilities in
compiler design.
For years now I've been dreaming of a chance to resurrect the old idea in some useful form.
Creatures is just a proof-of-concept design. What lays ahead has the potential to be quite
exciting.
Stay tuned ...
