As the second of the first two sets of puzzles released here, we're still not quite sure what age range is appropriate. All puzzles have no more than 40 pieces and should probably be good for about 9 years and up. If you have kids that are younger and can handle the relative complexity of moving this many pieces around we would greatly appreciate the feedback as we plan to start providing a large number of these puzzles for download.
The puzzles below are based on my (the webmaster) hobby of generating random pictures from either mathematical concepts or just spur of the moment ideas I have. There are Mandelbrot and Julia fractals where I experimented with an idea to make them more like 3D images by using the imaginary component as the z-axis. There are also images created with a program called 'Curves' which I haven't yet released as of this writing. The 'Curves' images are supposed to, in some respects, emulate a stained glass pattern.
If you are a teacher and would like to use these in some way, you can simply tell your students that all of these images were based on mathematical concepts. The simplest concepts are in the 'Curves' section where I simply create a virtual canvas and draw a number of random sized ellipses with random x and y dimensions. I then show only the middle of the canvas where there is almost never a complete ellipse. The fractals on the other hand, are literally complex as they employ the use of imaginary numbers. NOTE: Each puzzle is packed as a Windows program. The programs have been scanned and are virus free. Simply downnload and run. Nothing will be installed as the programs are fully self-contained.
